Tips for Writing Letters

Personal Statement

Your personal statement is an opportunity to explain your involvement, activities, grades, study habits and any extenuating circumstances that have had an impact on you during high school. Use the following questions to help you get started.

  • What organizations, activities and volunteer service have you completed while in high school?
  • In which classes did you struggle to earn C grades or higher?
  • What helps you learn the material in your classes?
  • Do you complete your homework on time?

Letters of Recommendation

Ask your high school counselor, advisor or a teacher to write a letter of recommendation that supports your application for admission to WIU. Your counselor/teacher should answer the following questions:

  • Your study habits and time management skills
  • Your academic successes and improvements
  • Circumstances that impacted your high school grades if you have given your counselor/teacher permission to share with WIU
