Question 1 - I was notified that my PIN was expired. What do I do?

Sometime between October 15th and October 29th, 2009, the STARS system will enhance security by changing from a four-digit PIN to an eight-character Password. When this change is made, your PIN will become expired. You will have 2 grace logins in which to change your PIN to a valid password.

When the new security is in place, your password will be required to be eight-characters long and must contain at least one letter and one number. After exhausting your two grace logins, the next time you access STARS you will be required to create a new password before you can sign on.

Question 2 - What should I do if none of the links work after I launch STARS?

If you are attempting to access STARS from a place of business, this problem usually indicates that your site has firewall software installed that blocks access to the STARS site. Contact your Network Administrator and request access to our site at https://mvs.wiu.edu ports 3000 and 4433 or IP Address 143.43.193.26 ports 3000 and 4433.

You may also want to check to see if your computer has any pop-up blockers installed. Some pop-up blockers will prevent STARS from launching. If you do have pop-up blockers installed, you need to either disable them or modify them to allow pop-ups from mvs.wiu.edu. We have compiled the instructions for several pop-up blockers on our Allowing Pop-ups for STARS page.

Occasionally system maintenance is required. View the System Shutdown Schedule for dates and times.

Question 7 - How do I access STARS?

STARS is available from anywhere in the world. All you need is access to the internet and web browser software. Just point your browser to http://stars.wiu.edu.

Question 8 - Will my computer work with STARS?

STARS has been tested and will work on the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer version 5 and above
  • Netscape version 4 and above
  • FireFox version 1.5 and above
  • Opera version 8 and above

(It is always recommended to use the most recent version of any browser).

Additionally, if you use a browser other than those listed above, most browsers that support javascript and cascading style sheets should be able to access STARS. Earlier versions may work to some degree, but their use may produce unpredictable results.

You do need to have JavaScript enabled for your browser. Check out these Javascript enabling instructions on how to make sure JavaScript is enabled.

STARS was designed for a minimum screen resolution of 800x600. If your resolution is less than this, you may not be able to access some portions of pages within STARS. If you have troubleseeing all of the information on the screen, this may be the reason.

If you have pop-up blockers installed, you need to either disable them or modify their settings to allow pop-ups from www.wiu.edu. STARS uses a pop-up window to access STARS and to access help screens while logged on to STARS.

Question 9 - Where are my Back, Forward and Print buttons?

Security is the main reason that STARS launches in a separate window without the normal navigation buttons. It is very important to us to make sure that the information you view while logged into STARS is accurate at all times. When a back button is used, you may view a page that has since been changed by you or, for some information, some other department on campus. For this reason, we have tried to make the only avenue for retrieving the information on the screen an action you initiate by pressing one of the buttons we have provided. This insures that you see the most current data while using STARS.

Similar reasoning is behind the removal of the Print button. We have tried to anticipate the most common needs for printing and provided our own print preview buttons on those pages. If any page were printed, it may show incomplete information or information that is in error. An example would be printing on the registration page. If you could print the page at any time, a schedule could be printed while errors still remained on the page. The print preview button we provide only shows up when all errors are corrected and the schedule is valid.

Although the absence of these buttons may be frustrating at times, please understand that it is our goal to make sure you can always depend on the information you find while using STARS.
