Dr. Brines joined the WIU CSP faculty in the fall of 2021. She is an experienced practitioner and educator, having served as an academic advisor for 13 years and as an adjunct professor and assistant professor. She is the vice president of the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) WIU chapter and has extensive experience in working collaboratively with university administration and functional areas on campus. She also chairs the College of Education and Human Services Faculty Advisory Council, advises the Epsilon Psi Chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma, and assists with Title IX and University Conduct Board hearings.
Julie currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Counselor Education, College Student Personnel, and Social Work at Western Illinois University and is the graduate program coordinator for the CSP program. Her teaching at Western spans a decade, where she has taught undergraduate students in the Department of Recreation, Park, Tourism, and Hospitality, undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration, and graduate students in the College Student Personnel program.
Dr. Brines’ academic research interests include graduate student mental health and well-being, successful career search processes for international graduate students, and the retention and persistence of first-generation students, most specifically the relationship between faculty and students.
Julie is a member of ACPA-College Student Educators International and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. She currently serves as one of two faculty-in-residence elect for ACPA's Commission for Global Dimensions of Student Development.
