All students complete the core curriculum and the program exit requirement. Additional requirements for the Student Affairs and Higher Education Leadership options vary based on the student's selected program track.
Core Courses
CSP 515: Designing Research for Higher Education and Student Affairs
Introduces research design in postsecondary education contexts. Emphasizes developing research questions, selecting appropriate methods, and addressing ethical considerations. Prepares students to design studies that inform student-centered practice and support evidence-based decision-making across educational environments.
CSP 550: Legal and Ethical Practice in Colleges and Universities
Explores legal and ethical frameworks that influence higher education practice. Emphasizes critical thinking, informed decision-making, professional responsibility, and the application of legal principles to real-world scenarios. Prepares practitioners to navigate policy, compliance, and ethics in student affairs and institutional contexts.
CSP 552: History and Foundations of Higher Education and Student Affairs
Examines the historical evolution of higher education and foundations of student affairs, introducing key theories, competencies, and approaches to practice that inform the profession and support student learning and success.
CSP 553: Organizational Structures and Systems in Higher Education
Analyzes organizational structures and administrative responsibilities in higher education. Emphasizes institutional planning, student-centered operations, and collaboration across units. Prepares higher education and student affairs professionals to navigate complex campus systems and contribute to institutional effectiveness and student success.
CSP 555: Developmental Approaches to Advising and Student Support
Builds interpersonal and professional skills for advising and student support, focusing on communication, feedback, guidance, and referral strategies to support student development and respond effectively to a range of student needs.
CSP 559: Student Development Theory and Critical Praxis
Explores student development theories with attention to power, culture, and institutional context. Emphasizes theory-to-practice application and identity analysis to support student learning, development, and engagement.
CSP 560: Belonging, Engagement and the College Environment
Examines how college environments influence student engagement, belonging, and success, with focus on underserved student experiences and college student retention. Highlights strategies for creating supportive spaces that strengthen involvement and promote meaningful student development.
CSP 567: Financial Leadership for Colleges and Universities
Examines financial leadership in higher education, including budgeting, funding models, resource allocation, and revenue generation. Emphasizes the role of fundraising, grant writing, and development in supporting institutional goals. Prepares students to navigate and lead within complex institutional financial systems.
CSP 600: Exploring Professional Identity Through Reflective Practice
Engages students in critical reflection to explore and refine their professional identity. Emphasizes the integration of theory, values, and experience through dialogue, applied learning, and reflective practice. Supports ongoing growth, purpose, and professional alignment across diverse roles and career stages.
Student Affairs Requirements
CSP 533: Perspectives in Higher Education and Student Affairs
Investigates current and emerging topics in higher education and student affairs. Designed to adapt to faculty expertise and student interests, this course encourages critical engagement, reflective dialogue, and application of theory to practice.
CSP 561: Practicum in Student Affairs
Combines hands-on experience in a student affairs setting with a faculty-led seminar that connects theory to practice, offering opportunities to build professional skills, reflect on learning, and engage with new areas of campus life and student support.
CSP 581: Leadership, Teams, and Group Dynamics
Examines group dynamics, communication, and leadership through the lens of team interaction and decision-making. Includes hands-on practice in small groups, applying concepts to strengthen collaboration and contribute to the campus community.
CSP 597: Program Design, Development, and Evaluation
Introduces the practice of designing, developing, and evaluating higher education and student affairs programs. Emphasizes identifying student needs, creating and mapping learning outcomes, and applying universal design and evaluation methods to create programming that supports student engagement, learning, and development.
CSP 598: Assessment in Student Affairs
Develops foundational and applied skills in student affairs assessment. Students critically examine assessment tools, plans, and cultures. Emphasizes outcome development, method selection, and data-informed improvements to enhance initiatives and services.
Higher Education Leadership Requirements
CSP 533: Perspectives in Higher Education and Student Affairs
Investigates current and emerging topics in higher education and student affairs. Designed to adapt to faculty expertise and student interests, this course encourages critical engagement, reflective dialogue, and application of theory to practice.
CSP 568: Field-Based Leadership Practice in Higher Education
Supervised field experience in a higher education or student affairs setting. Students engage in leadership practice under professional and faculty guidance, developing competencies and gaining practical experience aligned with career goals over the course of the academic term.
Exit Option
CSP 602: College Student Personnel Portfolio
College Student Personnel students will submit a portfolio of work completed throughout the program, accompanied by reflective narratives demonstrating mastery of program objectives and professional competencies. The portfolio will be developed under the supervision of graduate faculty.
