Counseling Programs at WIU

College Student Personnel Program

If you are passionate about working in a high-energy environment and supporting the development of college students, enrolling in the College Student Personnel master's program at Western may be the perfect opportunity to start your career in student affairs and higher education. A master's degree is the most common credential requirement in this field. Over 1,000 alumni have graduated from our program since 1970 and have had fulfilling careers.

If the field of student affairs is new to you, think about the people who touched your life while you were in college. Maybe it was your academic advisor or admissions counselor. Maybe it was a complex director in your residence hall or the advisor for your student organization. Many of the people in those positions are graduates of programs like ours, and they get to support students every day.

Our program offers two enrollment options, full-time (in-person) and part-time (online), to help you develop as effective and reflective leaders who approach student affairs work as socially and ethically responsible practitioners in a variety of settings. The CSP program is committed to its long-standing tradition of theory to practice with coursework focused on student development theory, leadership development, group dynamics, philosophy and history of higher education, organization and administration of student affairs, multicultural competency, counseling theory and techniques, and research methods.

Choose Your Path

Student Affairs Track (IN PERSON)

This full-time option is designed for recent college graduates who have gained student affairs experience primarily through undergraduate involvement, as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds who are seeking to establish a strong foundation in the field of student affairs.

This track offers a unique opportunity to blend your graduate coursework with an assistantship and practicum to gain hands-on professional experience in the field. Plus, graduate assistants receive a tuition waiver and monthly stipend .

Higher Education Leadership Track (ONLINE)

This part-time option is designed for both current student affairs professionals and individuals seeking a flexible learning format to advance or begin their careers in higher education.

Employment of postsecondary education administrators is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 14,500 openings for postsecondary education administrators are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. – U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Admissions Requirements and Process

Candidates are evaluated for admission on academic ability and achievements, student affairs knowledge and experience, and personal attributes necessary to successfully complete the program and thrive in the field of student affairs. Various factors play into the admission decision, such as a professional resume, personal goals statement, academic transcript, letters of recommendation, the Graduate Studies application, and a personal interview.

  • Three Letters of Recommendation: These recommendations should be from individuals who can address your skills, potential for success in the field of student affairs, maturity, and level of responsibility. At least one reference should be from a faculty member familiar with your academic ability. (If you are completing the form through Graduate Studies, your recommenders will receive an email with further instructions.)
  • Resume: Please make sure to update the document by including your most recent positions and achievements.

Academics

The cohort model is a central component of the CSP experience. Your cohort of approximately 12-18 peers will engage with you in class discussions, study with you at local coffee shops, attend campus events that you plan, and support you to graduation and beyond! Our students come from a variety of backgrounds bringing diverse mindsets and professional experiences. Cohort members come to Western from all over the United States and the world. Here at Western, you will be surrounded by new ideas and perspectives.

One of my favorite things about this program is to see the growth within the cohort and how much we have come together and how much we've grown together. I love that we challenge each other every day, I love that we ask questions and we come up with new ways of how to better support our students.

 Jacob Livingston, Class of 2020

Graduate assistantship and practicum experiences align with the theory-to-practice value philosophy of the CSP program. The opportunity to hold an assistantship and participate in a semester-long practicum enables you to fully engage in the learning process. You will apply theories and concepts gained in the classroom to real-life student affairs work on a daily basis. You gain professional skills, concepts, and knowledge to become outstanding student affairs practitioners who facilitate the learning and development of students.
