MACOMB, IL – Get the latest on the "hot" new children's and young adult books and discover the literature that will get your students and/or children excited about reading at the Western Illinois University Children's Literature Examination Center's Open House.

Faculty and staff in the CLEC are hosting the open house from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, April 24 and 8 a.m.-noon Friday, April 25 in Horrabin Hall (room 1). The event is open free to teachers, school administrators, librarians, parents or anyone interested in children's literature.

The center provides an impressive collection of books published in 2013-14 and includes most of the recent award winners, which will be available for review at the open house. The collection includes literature in a range of genres: fiction, nonfiction, traditional literature, picture books and poetry from most of the major publishers of books for children and young adults. The collection is non-circulating, but is open year-round to anyone who has an interest in seeing what is new in children's and young-adult literature.

The CLEC event will also feature the Lois and Lowell Lueck Collection, which showcases books selected based on established criteria for excellence in literature and writing. Lowell Lueck, former director of Institutional Research and Planning at Western, retired in 1993. Lowell, along with his wife, Lois, a former high school guidance counselor, established an endowment through Western's Foundation in memory of Ardeth and Leonard Grove to promote new ideas and methods for the improvement and teaching of reading in the Western Illinois region.

Participants attending the Thursday afternoon event can park in the lot south of Horrabin Hall between 2 and 6 p.m. (across from the Leslie F. Malpass Library) without parking permits. Friday participants should pick up visitor parking permits at Mowbray Hall located on WIU's Macomb campus. Registration is not required and refreshments will be served.
