Brodie Westen Obituary

MACOMB, IL – Services for former Western Illinois University Head Football Coach Brodie C. Westen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. Westen, 89, passed away Thursday, July 29 in Macomb.

After beginning his coaching career at Northern Michigan University, Westen came to WIU in 1971 to serve as an assistant football coach. He was promoted to head coach in 1974 and 1975, and was chosen Illinois Coach of the Year by the media in 1975. Westen was inducted into the WIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992, and had served on the board of directors for the Leatherneck Club.

He left WIU in 1975 to operate the Brodie Westen Company, a beverage distribution company in Macomb, which he ran for more than 20 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, and had served on the Macomb School Board and numerous boards of other local governmental bodies.

Westen is survived by his children, Curt, of Castle Rock, CO; Kristi Dakin, of Macomb; Joe, of Macomb; Stu, of Mukwonago, WI; and Rob, Rich and Tony, of all of Macomb; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles.
