Harty Named WIU Employee of the Month

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Western Illinois University Admissions and Records Coordinator Sheryl Harty has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for January 2022.

Harty was hired at WIU in June 2013 as an admissions records representative in Graduate Studies and was reclassified by audit to admissions records officer in Graduate Studies in July 2015. In January 2020 her title was changed to admissions records supervisor and, in July 2021, she was reclassified by audit to her current position.

According to Harty's nominators she is "enthusiastic, patient, kind and thoughtful" to WIU's international student population, as well as everyone she encounters. Each of Harty's nominators said her hard work and dedication has helped reached a record enrollment number for international students at WIU.

"She makes new and prospective students feel welcome and accepted," the nominators said. "She gives the students a sense of belonging and trust in the International Admission Office, and at WIU. One of her strengths is how she immersed herself in understanding the international admissions process. There are complex, global variations among degrees and transcripts, as well as culturally, and Sheryl quickly became an expert by adapting to changes in policies and procedures. The impact she makes is remarkable and her work provides accessibility to WIU for students around the world."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact the Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) at csec-nominations-g@wiu.edu.
