MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Social Media Lab will host a Lead for America fellow to assist with a project to promote digital literacy in the region.

The Illinois Broadband Lab has provided funds for the project, as well as additional funds for the fellowship through Lead for America.

Lead for America provides fellowships in various capacities to serve communities, and this paid position will be beneficial for the fellow and the community. Josh Averbeck, a professor of communication and director of the social media lab, expressed his enthusiasm for the fellowship opportunity.

"I am excited we can serve the needs of our community and provide an amazing opportunity for the fellow," said Averbeck.

Full-time fellows will receive a $30,000 stipend and may also be granted a $6,895 AmeriCorps education award, healthcare reimbursement, networking opportunities with other members, access to an alumni network and one-on-one program mentors.

"Anyone with an interest in serving the West Central Illinois region is welcome to apply. No college degree is necessary," said Averbeck.

Current graduate students are eligible to apply for the position and the fellow will assist in conducting workshops on digital literacy and cybersecurity, a conference to connect rural librarians and outreach for government programs that provide internet access.
