MACOMB, IL - - A celebration of the International Day of Peace will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 in the Western Illinois University Union Lamoine Room.

This year's theme is "Action for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals" and will address the displacement of millions of people worldwide from their home countries.

The International Day of Peace, "Peace Day," is observed worldwide each year in September. Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.

WIU celebrates Peace Day every year, and for the first time during the International Day of Peace celebration, the International Day of Peace Award will be given to someone who exemplifies the ideals of peace and social justice. The deadline for submitting nominations for this award is Aug. 31 each year and must be sent via email.

The Peace Day celebration is sponsored by the WIU Department of Political Science, the WIU College of Arts and Sciences, AMPLIFY, the Latin American Student Organization and the African Student Association.

The event will end with a candlelight walk to the Multicultural Center at 7:30 p.m. Light appetizers, refreshments and cake will be served.

For more information about the event or to nominate next year's winner, contact Julia Albarracin via email at j-albarracin@wiu.edu.
