WIU School of Music to Perform Choirs Fall Concert Oct. 18

MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois University School of Music will present a Fall Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.
Brian J. Winnie, associate professor and director of Choral Studies, and Jason Hawkins, assistant director of the School of Music and assistant professor of Music Education, curated a program based on the theme "Oceans Between Us." This theme was chosen for the University Singers' proposed program for their American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) performance. University Singers was one of 15 choirs, ranging from elementary through professional levels, selected from across ten states to perform at the ACDA Midwestern Regional Conference in Omaha this February. In addition, they will represent the state as the only choir selected from Illinois.
The WIU Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Treble Choir will perform a program entitled "Oceans Between Us," inspired by the Swedish folk tune "Trilo." The song is about someone longing for their loved one who has gone to sea and is typically sung upon their return. The choirs will present a variety of musical pieces that relate to this theme, some of which are poetic interpretations of the ocean; some are about life at sea and others discuss the philosophical divide between us.
The University Singers will conclude the program with pieces that reflect the experiences of two perspectives: the loved one who is adventuring at sea and the loved one who is waiting for their return back home.
This program also celebrates diverse composers and vocal colors. Attendees will hear belting, various vocal soundscapes and classical styles of singing throughout the program.
This performance is open free for general seating and will be live-streamed on the School of Music's YouTube channel and Facebook page.
