WIU Anthropology Professor to Host Zoom Lecture Oct. 26

MACOMB, IL - - MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Department of Sociology and Anthropology will host a Zoom lecture at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26.

The lecture, "Applied Anthropology in the Era of Climate Change: Cases in Africa," will be delivered by Visiting Scholar William N. Gblerkpor. The lecture is free and open to the public and can be joined using this link: wiu.zoom.us/j/91831905541.

"As climate change threatens the livelihoods and humankind's relationship with the natural world, anthropological knowledge and methods are becoming increasingly important in addressing contemporary challenges and exploring new opportunities for sustainable futures," said Gblerkpor. "In this talk, I will explore the growing application of anthropological knowledge in creating sustainable, resilient and holistic local solutions with global potential in areas like climate change, leadership, environmental literacy, biocultural heritage conservation, resilient tourism, food security and the global superfoods market."

Gblerkpor is the 2023 C.T. Vivian Lecturer in Sociology and Anthropology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2017. He is an archaeological anthropologist, cultural heritage specialist and museum studies expert. His research and writing explore the dynamic role of material culture and landscapes in the historical and contemporary construction and maintenance of social identities and livelihoods in West Africa.
