MACOMB, IL - – In honor of Black History Month, Western Illinois University's Justice Inclusion Diversity and Equity (JIDE) office will host WIU Professor Peter Cole for his presentation on the "Chicago Race Riot of 1919" beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 in the WIU University Union Sandburg Theater.

"For nearly five years, I've been working on the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project, doing the challenging yet vital work to uplift the history of one of Illinois's most violent moments. In this presentation, I'll discuss the history and legacy of 1919, which continues to shape the city of Chicago today, along with the public history and art initiatives that CRR19 undertakes." Cole said.

Cole will speak about The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19). This is a public art and history initiative created to commemorate the worst incident in the city's history. The CRR19 project demonstrates that the path to achieving racial equity and justice first demands acknowledging the horrors of the past and the ways that structural inequities persist in communities of color.

For individuals that cannot attend in person, a Zoom link is available to join virtually, at wiu.zoom.us/j/94741170679.
