WIU Participates in Rural IL CTE Project For Rural Education
September 9, 2024
MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University is playing an integral role in the Rural IL Career and Technical Education (CTE) Project, a collaborative initiative to enhance educational opportunities in rural and small school districts across the state. In partnership with the Association of Illinois Rural and Small Schools (AIRS) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), WIU's Seymour Center for Rural Education is at the forefront of efforts to support and sustain CTE programs that are critical to the success of students and local communities.
CTE programs are essential in increasing the capacity of rural and small schools to deliver high-quality, individualized education. These programs pave the way for rural students to establish strong personal and professional foundations and play a vital role in supporting local businesses and industries through internships and future employment opportunities.
As part of this initiative, the Rural IL CTE Project has set goals to address rural CTE programs' unique needs and equity gaps. Through intentional research and targeted technical assistance, the project aims to include all rural and small schools in Illinois to strengthen and expand CTE offerings.
A key component of this effort is the newly launched Web Portal, which serves as a resource for rural and small school districts. The portal compiles research findings and technical assistance tools developed by the Rural IL CTE Project team, making it easier for educators across Illinois to access the support they need to enhance their CTE programs.
"Engaging in this collaborative work with AIRS and ISBE—work focused on supporting the development of CTE opportunities for our state's rural and small schools—is just one example of the vital role to be played by the Seymour Center for Rural Education and its staff. I particularly appreciate the efforts of David Ardrey and John Glasgow," WIU College of Education and Human Services Interim Dean Eric Sheffield said.
