WIU Celebrates Black History Month with a Month-Long Series of Events

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC), will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a diverse lineup of events designed to educate, inspire and bring the campus community together.
The month has kicked off with the MLK Week of Service and will have more events to celebrate and honor Black history and culture, and recognizing the lasting contributions and influence of African Americans. These events create space for learning, reflection and celebration while encouraging meaningful connections across campus.
"This year, our goal is to celebrate excellence while honoring the legacy that continues to shape us," said LeRon Williams, Associate Director of the Multicultural Center. "Western Illinois University has had a profound impact on generations of students, and that impact is still felt today. It is our responsibility to acknowledge those who came before us, to let them know they are seen, valued, and appreciated for paving the way forward."
The following events will take place in celebration of Black History Month. Events take place in the MCC unless otherwise noted:
- 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 4-5. – MLK Banner Signing (University Union)
- Noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 – Black Excellence Brunch
- 5:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 – Super Bowl Watch Party
- 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 – Roll With Soul (Horrabin Gym)
- 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 – Taste of Africa & Caribbean
- 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17 – Practice to Impress: Speed Interview Night
- 2-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. – AAS Conference: Sankofa—Healing & Liberation
- 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 – Laced in Luxury Ball
- 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 – GBCC Game Night
- 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 – MCC Mixer: Open Mic Night
- 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 – Sip N' B*tch
- 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 – Barbershop Talk
