Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has incredible alumni who are making an impact in the workforce. This series features students from around the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB, IL — Meet Deshaun Richardson, a graduate of Western Illinois University's Physical Education program, who was recently hired by Chicago Public Schools as a physical education teacher at Roswell B. Mason Elementary School.

As an alumnus, Richardson knew he wanted to return to his community and give back. The application process was clear-cut and simple, with strong support from the CPS Talent Office. Before beginning his student teaching, Richardson completed an application and interviewed with the principal at Mason Elementary, who helped secure his placement at Madero Middle School. His time as a student teaching within CPS further prepared him for a full-time role in the district.

During his time at WIU, Richardson learned the true importance of time management.

"There is so much to learn, and sometimes you can't teach it all in one hour so plan accordingly," Richardson said.

His Physical Education major equipped him with the skills to effectively organize lessons, manage classroom time and create meaningful learning experiences for his students.

Richardson plans to stay involved with WIU by remaining connected to the Leatherneck community.
