February 26, 2026
MACOMB, IL - - Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has incredible alumni who are making an impact in the workforce. This series features students from around the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB, IL — Meet Bel Schable, a graduate of Western Illinois University's Nursing program, who was recently hired by Springfield Clinic Orthopedic Surgery, where she works primarily in the outpatient clinic setting and part-time in the operating room alongside other surgeons.
Schable utilized the time between her junior and senior years to work with an externship at Springfield Clinic which exposed her to 17 departments, building valuable and strong professional relationships early on that are maintained today.
This experience also helped open the door to the interview for her current career position. Her internship, paired with nursing leadership courses and the WIU Career Center, polished her resume and helped her confidently prepare for this opportunity.
"WIU was truly the best decision I didn't know I needed, and Dr. Thompson inspired me to continue my education and pursue a master's degree in nursing education," Schable said.
During her time at WIU, Schable learned the importance of trying new things:
"I learned how to work effectively in diverse environments alongside people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and strengths, skills that are essential in healthcare," Schable said. "Campus opportunities allowed me to explore a wide range of interests, from beekeeping to MMA to Bible study, sometimes all in the same day."
Schable plans to stay involved with WIU by attending alumni events and continuing to support and represent the university.
