March 6, 2026
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University is pleased to announce that Sherry C. M. Lindquist, professor of art history in the College of Fine Arts and Communication has been selected to deliver the 2026 Distinguished University Professor Lecture. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.
Lindquist joined the WIU faculty in 2012 and has published extensively on medieval monsters, the meanings of nudity in medieval art, the history of the book, gender, late medieval Burgundy and neo-medievalism - including her most recent book, "the Book of Hours and the Body: Somaesthetics, Posthumanism, and the Uncanny."
Her 2026 Distinguished Faculty Lecture is titled - "Art, Horror, Humor, and Empathy: the Creatures of Hieronymus Bosch." It will focus on the strange creatures that haunt the paintings of 16th Century artist Hieronymus Bosch and how they are still with us in the 21st Century.
It will explore how Bosch's scenes of ridiculous hybrids and scenes of torture and degradation continue to have an impact. Lindquist will also discuss some of the less appealing aspects of Bosch's art which includes the dehumanizing of certain groups of people and how we contend responsibly with the legacies of prejudice and hatred embedded in much of our shared cultural heritage.
Lindquist has been recognized by grants from the Fulbright, Getty, Kress and Mellon foundations as well as the Newberry Library, Yale Center for British Art and the British Academy.
The lecture is free and open to the public, and will also be livestreamed on WIU's YouTube channel at youtube.com/WesternIllinoisU. To learn more about McClure's work, view her Curriculum Vitae at go.wiu.edu/4aOjmTy.
