WIU to Host State Advocacy Training Event
April 1, 2026
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - With momentum building in Springfield, IL, around a new funding model for public universities, Western Illinois University is inviting alumni and friends to take action.
On April 13 at 7 p.m. central time, WIU alumni and supporters are encouraged to participate in a virtual advocacy webinar. The session will equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate for fair and equitable funding for public higher education in Illinois.
For years, Illinois public universities have been underfunded. Recent data indicates that WIU is currently the least adequately funded public university in the state. In response, state leaders, including WIU alumna Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford `91, have introduced legislation to establish an adequate and equitable funding formula aimed at addressing these disparities.
That legislation has recently advanced out of a House committee and may soon be considered by the full Illinois House, making this a critical moment for advocacy.
"Many alumni and supporters want to help but aren't sure where to start," WIU Director of Government and Public Relations Zach Messersmith said. "This webinar will provide clear, practical guidance on how to effectively share your voice and support WIU during this pivotal time."
The April 13 training session will include a welcome from President Kristi Mindrup and an update on the bill status from Messersmith. Director of Policy and Research at the Partnership for College Completion Mike Abrahamson and Senior Policy Associate at Advance Illinois Eyob Villa-Moges will facilitate a presentation on how alumni can effectively advocate for WIU, followed by a question and answer session and opportunity to provide outreach to lawmakers.
Registration is now open. Interested alumni and friends can register at tinyurl.com/WIUAdvocacy to be part of this important effort to ensure a stronger future for WIU and public higher education in Illinois.
