WIU Mourns the Death of Student Geri Fitch
April 20, 2026
MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University community is saddened to learn of the death of WIU sophomore social work major Geri Lynn Fitch, of Macomb, who passed away April 15.
Fitch was a non-traditional student who had dedicated her work to providing in-home support for individuals with disabilities.
"Geri was truly a light and a joy to have in class. She was diligent in her coursework and maintained perfect attendance," Sharon Hunter, African American Studies instructor, said. "We often shared meaningful conversations before class, as she was always early, waiting in the hall. I also appreciated her consistency in seeking clarity about her assignments.
"When we lose a member of our community too soon, we grieve together," WIU President Kristi Mindrup said. "As someone who called Macomb home, Geri was part of the fabric of both our University and our local community. We extend our deepest sympathy and support to her family, friends and all who knew and cared for her."
A funeral service for Fitch will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Blackburn Cemetery.
