MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — Dance is power, personal, cultural and transformative.

Western Illinois University, in collaboration with Illinois State University, co-hosted the American College Dance Association (ACDA) 2026 Central Region Conference in March, bringing together 22 colleges and universities from Maryland, Texas, California, Arizona, Missouri, Michigan and Illinois for a dynamic celebration of movement and expression.

"The American College Dance Association exists to support, affirm, and advocate for dance in higher education. By co-hosting this event on our campus, we welcomed students, colleagues, and professionals from across the country to celebrate, connect, and renew our shared purpose. Together, we affirmed the vital role of dance in society and its power to cultivate compassionate, creative, and resilient individuals and artists," WIU Assistant Director of Theatre and Dance Donald Laney said.

Centered on the theme "Dance as Power," the conference explored the cultural, political, emotional and spiritual dimensions of dance as both an art form and a catalyst for change. The event highlighted how dance serves as a means of personal empowerment, cultural preservation and community connection.

Dance as personal power emphasizes embodiment, allowing individuals to reclaim and express themselves through movement. It also fosters healing by creating space to process experiences, build confidence and encourage self-expression without words.

Dance as cultural power reflects the importance of preserving traditions while embracing innovation. Through performance and shared experiences, dance connects generations and communities, reinforcing identity and resilience.

Conference highlights included three adjudicated concerts, a gala concert, a National ScreenDance premiere, as well as guest artists in West African, capoeira, Dunham technique, and Chinese and Mongolian traditional dance. More than 275 dance students participated in over 40 classes throughout the four days.

By co-hosting this regional conference, Western Illinois University and Illinois State University reinforced their commitment to advancing the arts, supporting student artists and fostering meaningful collaboration across institutions.
