Fitzjarrald Named June CSEC EOM
July 17, 2026
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Sara Fitzjarrald, a dedicated member of Western Illinois University and Foundation Accounting senior specialist, has been recognized as the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month.
Fitzjarrald has consistently demonstrated a commitment to supporting colleagues across the University by sharing expertise, providing guidance and helping others navigate complex business and foundation processes. During the University's transition to Colleague, Fitzjarrald became a trusted resource for employees seeking assistance with system functions, formatting, financial processes and reporting, often responding to questions outside of assigned responsibilities.
Known for patience, kindness and a willingness to help, Fitzjarrald ensures colleagues receive timely answers to their questions. When the answer is not immediately available, Fitzjarrald takes the initiative to identify the appropriate resource and follow through until the issue is resolved.
Fitzjarrald's attention to detail and commitment to accuracy have also helped departments avoid costly errors. In one instance, after noticing a potential duplicate charge during an interdepartmental transfer, Fitzjarrald worked with the billing department and monitored the budget line for several months to ensure the department was not charged twice.
In support of the Regional American Choral Directors Association conference hosted by the University this spring, Fitzjarrald played a key role in establishing the project and budget structure needed to manage registration revenue and conference expenses. Despite the additional workload, Fitzjarrald ensured all financial processes were completed on schedule to meet conference deadlines.
Throughout the eight-month registration period, Fitzjarrald also identified conference registration payments that required proper allocation and proactively contacted the department to ensure funds were accurately recorded.
Fitzjarrald is also committed to helping colleagues learn from mistakes by taking the time to verify transactions, explain corrections and provide guidance that strengthens understanding of University business practices. This collaborative approach reflects a belief that shared knowledge and teamwork contribute to a more efficient and successful University.
Fitzjarrald's willingness to go beyond assigned responsibilities while supporting colleagues with professionalism, accuracy and care exemplifies the commitment to service and excellence that embodies the core values of WIU.
As the Civil Service Employee of the Month, Fitzjarrald will receive a $100 stipend (before taxes), a plaque, a reserved parking space and recognition through a University press release. Fitzjarrald's photo will also be displayed by the Office of Human Resources and will be eligible for consideration for the Civil Service Employee of the Year Award in December.
The Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month Award recognizes Civil Service employees who demonstrate exceptional enthusiasm, effort and quality in job performance by going above and beyond their regular job duties. Nominations are placed as a permanent record in the recipient's personnel file.
