Wickert joined WIU in September 2019 as a Grounds Worker with WIU Quad Cities Operations and Maintenance. She was promoted to Facility Operations Specialist in December 2023, a position she continues to hold. Outside of work, Wickert enjoys farm life and spending time with her Australian Shepherds, Charlie (pictured here) and Francie.

Wickert Named August CSEC EOM

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Penny Wickert has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for August for her strong commitment to serving the Western Illinois University community and maintaining a welcoming, safe and attractive environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

"Wickert consistently demonstrates integrity, dedication and a willingness to step beyond assigned responsibilities to support the mission of the University. Following the loss of a permanent groundskeeper position, Wickert took initiative to ensure the campus grounds and gardens continued to be maintained at a high standard. Despite reduced staffing, Wickert developed new and creative approaches to care for these areas efficiently while continuing to uphold the appearance and quality of the campus environment," her nominator said.

In addition to grounds and garden responsibilities, Wickert has embraced additional responsibilities related to building maintenance and provided critical assistance during the closure and relocation of two campus buildings. Through this support, Wickert has helped the University navigate these transitions effectively while contributing to cost savings and operational efficiency.

"Wickert's willingness to adapt, take on new challenges and support coworkers reflects the WIU value of Personal Growth through a commitment to learning, flexibility and personal responsibility. Wickert consistently demonstrates a team-first attitude and a dedication to finding solutions that benefit the entire University community," her nominator said.

By going above and beyond the expectations of her position, Wickert has made a significant impact on the Quad Cities campus and represents the type of service, commitment and excellence that makes a Civil Service Employee of the Month deserving of recognition.

As the Civil Service Employee of the Month, Wickert will receive a $100 stipend (before taxes), a plaque, a reserved parking space and recognition through a University press release. Wickert's photo will also be displayed by the Office of Human Resources and will be eligible for consideration for the Civil Service Employee of the Year Award in December.

The Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month Award recognizes Civil Service employees who demonstrate exceptional enthusiasm, effort and quality in job performance by going above and beyond their regular job duties. Nominations are placed as a permanent record in the recipient's personnel file.
