WIU Student Earns Data for Social Impact Certificate from Washington University in St. Louis

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University graduate student, Winter Hurst-Leadicker, has earned a Certificate in Data for Social Impact from the Center for Social Development at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, expanding her expertise in data-informed decision-making, public administration and social impact.

Hurst-Leadicker, a WIU alumna with bachelor's degrees in Political Science and History and a current graduate student in College Student Personnel (CSP), specializing in bureaucracy, credits the WIU Political Science Department with helping guide her toward the certification opportunity.

The certificate has strengthened Hurst-Leadicker's ability to apply data-informed approaches to her professional responsibilities at the WIU Office of Equal Opportunity and Access. Her work includes equitable data handling in casework and connecting students in need with relevant social sector organizations.

"The lessons taught to me by WashU professors and St. Louis city leaders have allowed me to analyze and understand data handling as a field, especially when applying that to public administrative institutional work, social sector organizations, as well as private-sector developmental aid to low-income communities." Hurst-Leadicker said.

Originally from the St. Louis metro-east area, Winter said her degree has also played a significant role in opening professional doors and connecting her with prestigious institutions in her home region.

"My bachelor's degree from WIU has allowed me to get my foot in the door, in a professional manner, with prestigious institutions back home, thus furthering the impact that WIU has had on my life and the lives of others. Primarily in promoting my own social mobility." Hurst-Leadicker said.

Winter emphasized that the certificate is not only a professional accomplishment but also an opportunity to improve how she serves students and contributes to public-sector work. By applying the knowledge gained through the program, she can better understand the role of data in supporting equitable practices and connecting individuals with resources that address their needs.

Her experience also demonstrates the value of professional networking and educational opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Through the guidance and connections made at WIU, Winter was able to pursue specialized training at a nationally recognized institution and bring that knowledge back to her work within the university.

Winter expressed appreciation for the WIU Political Science Department for initially steering her toward the certification opportunity, recognizing the department's role in supporting her professional growth and continued educational development.

Her accomplishment also highlights the potential value of professional certificates for CSP graduate students. Additional training in data analysis, social impact and public administration can help prepare future student affairs professionals to navigate institutional systems, support diverse student needs and contribute to more effective and equitable organizations.

Winter's achievement reflects the broader impact of WIU education and professional networking in creating opportunities for continued learning, career development, and social mobility.
