Brenzinger Receives WIU Presidential Scholarship 2027-28

MACOMB, IL - - Freshman Bella Brenzinger of Schaumburg, IL, has been named a recipient of the Western Illinois University President's Scholarship, in conjunction with the AIM High Commitment scholarship. These scholarships cover four years of tuition, fees, a double residence hall room and standard board for eight semesters.

"We are proud to recognize these students for their accomplishments and academic achievements," WIU President Kristi Mindrup said. "The President's Scholarship provides opportunities for students to continue their education at WIU and pursue their goals and aspirations, all while becoming a part of the Leatherneck community. We are eager to welcome these students and see how their experiences will shape their futures."

In high school, Brenzinger was involved in clubs focused on preventing drug, alcohol, vaping, smoking and gambling behaviors and advocating for mental health awareness and leadership. Additionally, she was a member of Operation Snowball Inc.'s Board of Directors and directed the chapter at her high school. She was a student ambassador, peer mediator, Saxon LIFT mentor and a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Partner's Club, Students Helping Others and UNICEF. She has earned over 200 hours of community service with these organizations.

"I chose WIU because from the moment I set foot on campus I was impressed by the incredible and welcoming environment created by staff and student ambassadors," Brenzinger said. " The student-to-teacher ratio and the extensive resources available to students were a major deciding factor in my decision to become a Leatherneck. After speaking with many professors at Discover Western Day, I knew I would receive a quality education and I would be more than just a student ID number at WIU. I also really appreciated the walkable, safe, and clean campus and how the city of Macomb is highly integrated with the university."

At WIU, Brenzinger plans to major in Middle Level Education specializing in Mathematics and minor in Spanish.

She hopes to get involved in the Multicultural Center, especially La Casa Latina and the Council for Exceptional Children, Kappa Mu Epsilon, The Society of Educators, The Book Was Better and RockyTHON.

"I am also interested in making an impact through community service on campus," Brenzinger said.

Following graduation, she plans to earn a master's degree in Mathematics and utilize her Spanish minor in her future career as an educator.

To qualify for the WIU President's Scholarship, students must first be awarded WIU's AIM HIGH Western Commitment scholarship. The scholarship decision is also weighted by proof of volunteer and community service.
