Arreola Receives WIU Presidential Scholarship 2027-28

MACOMB, IL - - Freshmen Emmanuel Arreola of Bellwood, IL, has been named a recipient of the Western Illinois University President's Scholarship, in conjunction with the AIM High Commitment scholarship. These scholarships cover four years of tuition, fees, a double residence hall room and a standard board for eight semesters.

"We are proud to recognize these students for their accomplishments and academic achievements," WIU President Kristi Mindrup said. "The President's Scholarship provides opportunities for students to continue their education at WIU and pursue their goals and aspirations, all while becoming a part of the Leatherneck community. We are eager to welcome these students and see how their experiences will shape their futures."

In high school, Arreola was involved in many activities, including being a lector, Sunday school teacher and youth group leader at his church; co-director/chairman of my school's Hispanic Heritage Assembly, NHS, Société Honoraire de Français, Varsity Tennis, Treasure of Raza Unidos and Class Club of 2026, Secretary of Multi-Cultural Club, Culinary Club, Intramurals, lead role in his school's musical of Mamma Mia, assistant technician for King Transmission, shift lead and manager at Dairy Queen and sales associate at Journeys Kidz.

"I chose WIU because of many positive reasons, like their top-tier criminal justice program while still being extremely affordable. Though my primary reason for choosing WIU has to be the school's environment and people, they make everyone feel welcome no matter the differences while also making sure that every student's voice is heard and to its full potential," Arreola said.

At WIU, Arreola plans to double major in Law Enforcement & Justice Administration and Forensic Psychology.

Additionally, he hopes to be involved in the admissions process for incoming freshmen to help soothe the college application process for first-generation students. Arreola would also like to partake in clubs that will help me gain experience and knowledge for becoming a criminal defense attorney and getting into law school.

Following graduation, he plans to become a criminal defense attorney who advocates for individuals who are wrongfully accused and lack the financial resources to secure strong and legal representation.

"I plan to earn my Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. After law school, I aim to work at a large, respected law firm where I can gain hands-on experience, mentorship and a deep understanding of high-level litigation. This experience will prepare me to eventually open my own law firm dedicated to defending those who are wrongfully accused, especially those from underrepresented and low-income communities," Arreola said.

To qualify for the WIU President's Scholarship, students must first be awarded WIU's AIM HIGH Western Commitment scholarship. The scholarship decision is also weighted by proof of volunteer and community service.
