WIU Joins HL7’s Inaugural Break the Code Cohort

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's School of Computing, Data, and Mathematical Sciences is proud to partner with HL7 International's inaugural Break the Code program, giving WIU students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the technologies shaping the future of healthcare.

HL7 International, a leading standard‑setting organization for electronic health records and healthcare data exchange, offers this free, year-long program. Students will learn to build real Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) applications, work with healthcare Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and data standards, explore the responsible use of AI in healthcare and work toward earning public HL7 credentials. No prior coding or FHIR experience is needed.

Initially identified by MBA graduate student and WIU Computer Science alumnus Femi Oke (‘24), this opportunity is now available to students across disciplines. The program is especially relevant for students in Computer Science, Health Science Management, Information Systems, Nursing, Public Health and related fields.
