NABA WIU Members Gain Experience Through Case Competition

MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University senior Business Analytics student Michelle Ajipe and Economics alumna Joan Maina (‘26), members of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) WIU chapter, participated in a case competition in March, putting their teamwork, problem-solving and business knowledge to the test.

"Joan and I traveled to Chicago to participate in the case competition, where we presented our research and developed a business plan for a footwear brand. We had limited time to conduct our research, analyze the information, and learn how to build frameworks to develop a strong business plan. It was a great opportunity to apply what we've learned in the classroom to a real-world business challenge, and we both gained a lot of valuable experience from the process," Ajipe said.

During the competition, Ajipe and Maina collaborated to analyze a real-world business case and develop a strategic solution. The experience provided the students with an opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom while strengthening their communication, critical-thinking and presentation skills.

The case competition was one of several professional development opportunities available through NABA WIU. The organization provides students with opportunities to connect with peers, gain hands-on experience and further develop skills that can be applied in their future careers.
