MACOMB, IL - - Yong Tang, professor of journalism and media law in Western Illinois University's School of Communication, Media and Experience Industries, has received the 2026 Distinguished Publication Award from the Communication and Law Division of the National Communication Association (NCA) for his book, "Freedom of Information Law in China: From Imperial Court Diaries to Open Government Information Regulations."

The award recognizes outstanding scholarship in communication law and policy. Tang's book examines the development of freedom of information law in China and its implications for government transparency and public access to information.

"I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from the National Communication Association. My book examines the evolution of freedom of information law in China while addressing broader questions about the ongoing challenges of government transparency and the public's right to know worldwide," Tang said. "I hope this award will draw greater scholarly attention to these important issues. For me, the greatest reward of scholarship is not simply receiving recognition, but contributing to a deeper understanding of the public's right to know. I am also grateful to Western Illinois University for providing an academic home where I can pursue my research and share its insights with students."

Founded in 1914, the NCA is a leading scholarly organization dedicated to advancing communication research, teaching and practice. Tang will be recognized at the association's annual convention in New Orleans in November.

Tang's research also supports his teaching at WIU, where students in media law and ethics courses examine First Amendment principles and legal accountability.
