MACOMB, IL - - For 15 years, Western Illinois University Professor Yong Tang has been bringing media law to life through interactive courtroom simulations that give students an opportunity to experience the legal system from multiple perspectives.

Since launching the initiative in 2011, Tang has transformed traditional classroom instruction into practical courtroom experiences, assigning students roles as plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, judges, witnesses, jurors and courtroom journalists. The simulations cover approximately 10 areas of media law, including broadcasting law, freedom of speech, defamation, privacy, copyright and freedom of information.

Through the exercises, students apply legal principles, evaluate evidence, construct persuasive arguments and develop critical-thinking skills. In earlier years, Tang conducted as many as 20 mock trials per semester. During Spring 2026, his BC&J 400 (Mass Communication Law and Ethics) course featured approximately 10 simulations, accounting for 12% of students' final course grades.

The initiative is supported by detailed case materials, courtroom procedures and grading rubrics and has received favorable evaluations from faculty colleagues and former students.

Adding a theatrical element to the learning experience, Tang assumes the role of Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, complete with a judicial robe and wig. He also uses a lightweight plastic gavel, striking it dramatically against the podium as he announces his verdicts, bringing humor and energy into the classroom.

Building on 15 years of this teaching approach, Tang plans to expand the mock trial activities into his COMM 241 (Public Speaking) courses in December 2026. The simulations will emphasize persuasive speaking, evidence-based argumentation, critical listening and effective oral communication.

Tang has invited WIU University Communications and Marketing to visit the classes in early December to observe the simulations, photograph participating students and conduct interviews about their experiences. Exact dates and classroom arrangements can be coordinated with Tang.

The initiative demonstrates WIU's commitment to experiential learning and innovative, student-centered teaching, offering students opportunities to move beyond textbook instruction and develop practical skills through active participation.

Additional supporting materials, including course syllabi, hypothetical case scenarios, courtroom simulation instructions, grading rubrics, peer teaching evaluations dating back to 2011 and former student testimonials, are available upon request.

The initiative was also highlighted in the WIU Board of Trustees report dated November 30–December 1, 2022.
