WIU Director, Students Recognized at Broadcasting Banquet

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's broadcasting department honored students and the alumna of the year, Darcie Shinberger, at its sixth annual broadcasting banquet, "Broadcasting Goes Hollywood," in April.
Shinberger, University Relations director, received the Distinguished Alumna of the Year award because of her professional accomplishments and continued dedication to Western Illinois University. Her role of supervising the University's public relations program includes working with media outlets, community leaders, state and federal officials, University administrators, students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as the public. She is the University spokesperson and is responsible for crisis communication management. Shinberger also supervises the Visual Production Center (VPC), a WIU service center that provides photographic and other visual presentations for faculty, staff and students in support of the institution's mission, as well as to alumni and community organizations. She also serves as a writer, host and producer of the public affairs program, "Campus and Community," on University Television/Macomb Cable Channel 3 and is the host of the weekly radio show, "Community Conversation," on WKAI/WLRB in Macomb. She earned her bachelor's degree in mass communications (1989) and a master's degree in college student personnel from Western (1998). She also has a master's degree in global human resource development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2004).
Awards were presented to the following students listed by Illinois county, followed by out-of-state:
BOONE COUNTY
Belvidere (61008) - Kathie Kurtenbach, a junior communication major and broadcasting minor, was in a four-member group that received the Broadcasting 101 best video project award.
COOK COUNTY
Chicago (60620) - Sparkle Sapp, a senior broadcasting major and law enforcement and justice administration minor from the 8100 of S. Princeton Ave., received the best documentary/corporate video award.
Elk Grove Village (60067) - Deidre Haye, a senior broadcasting major and journalism minor, was among a group of students who received the best television newscast award.
Inverness (60067) - Matt Gierloff, a freshman broadcasting major, was in a group of four to receive the Broadcasting 101 best video project award.
Northbrook (60062) - Alex Degman, a senior broadcasting and journalism double major, received the best short news story, best on-air personality and best long radio news story awards.
HANCOCK COUNTY
Warsaw (62379) - Ryan Thomas, a senior broadcasting major and graphic communication minor, was among two students who received the best sports package award. He also received the best radio play-by-play announcer award.
KANE COUNTY
Saint Charles (60175) - Kyle Herreras, a junior graphic communication and broadcasting double major and Spanish minor, received the broadcasting 101 best audio project award.
LAKE COUNTY
Grayslake (60030) - Jennifer Sas, a junior broadcasting major and business minor, was among three students to receive the best television newscast award.
Lake Villa (60046) - Derek Diesner, a sophomore broadcasting major and marketing minor, received the best video play-by-play announcer award.
LIVINGSTON COUNTY
Pontiac (61764) - Jessica Manker, a junior journalism major and broadcasting minor, was in a group of four to receive the Broadcasting 101 best video project award.
MCDONOUGH COUNTY
Macomb (61455) - Quintin Parker, a senior broadcasting major and music business minor, received the best radio color announcer, best radio or TV script, best feature/public affairs radio production and best video color announcer awards;
John Stout, a junior broadcasting major and music business minor, was among a group of four to receive the Broadcasting 101 best video project award;
Varqa Buehrer, a senior broadcasting major and music minor, received the best video promotional production award.
MERCER COUNTY
Sherrard (61281) - Liz Bales, a senior broadcasting major and communication minor, received the outstanding reporting package award for hard news and the best video series award.
PEORIA COUNTY
Dunlap (61525) - Brian "Gil" McIntire, a senior broadcasting major and graphic communication minor, received the outstanding reporting package for a feature award.
Peoria (61615) - Stephen Hapke, a senior broadcasting major and marketing minor, received the best public service announcement (PSA)/commercial script award.
ROCK ISLAND
Milan (61264) - Nick Moron, a senior broadcasting major and journalism minor, received the outstanding electronic news gathering (ENG) package award.
SANGAMON COUNTY
Chatham (62629) - Zachary Pillsbury, a senior broadcasting major and music business minor, was among two students who received the best sports package. He also received the best radio promotional production and was among a group of three students who won best television newscast awards.
OUT OF COUNTRY:
JAPAN
Saijo - Kozue Yamauchi, a senior broadcasting major and graphic communication minor, received the best overall TV graphics award.
Also announced were the Fall 2008 WIUTV3 anchors. News anchors will include: Sas; Parker; Sophie Simmons (Macomb), a freshman kinesiology and broadcasting double major; Brittany Earl (Palatine, IL), a junior broadcasting major and dance minor; Kelsea O'Dea (Springfield, IL), a communication major with minors in marketing and broadcasting; and Emily Ramey (Springfield, IL), a broadcasting major.
Sports anchors will include: Kyle Schassburger (South Holland), a freshman broadcasting major; Nick McCay (Dalton, GA), a broadcasting major and geography minor; and Nina Police (Hanover Park, IL), a broadcasting major and marketing minor.
Weather anchors will include: Dave Dustin (Lake in the Hills, IL), a junior broadcasting major and geography minor; Cheyenne Parrott (Broadview, IL), a meteoryology major with minors in broadcasting and mathematics; and Jared Maples (Mount Olive, IL), a meteorology major and broadcasting minor.
Television football announcers will include: Diesner for play-by-play and Jon Stockton (Macomb), a senior broadcasting major and mathematics minor, for color.
Radio football announcers will include: Schassburger for play-by-play and Julio Rausseo (Elgin), a broadcasting major, for color.
Paige Stark (Omaha, NE), a junior broadcasting major and journalism minor, received the Illinois Broadcasters Association Scholarship; and Police received the Stephanie Wilson Memorial Scholarship.
