Dallinger Named Associate Provost for Undergraduate & Graduate Studies
June 11, 2008
MACOMB, IL -- Judith Dallinger, assistant provost for undergraduate studies and professor of communication at Western Illinois University, has been appointed as Western's associate provost for undergraduate and graduate studies, effective July 1, WIU Provost and Academic Vice President Jack Thomas announced.
Dallinger has served as the assistant provost for undergraduate studies since November 2004. In that role, Dallinger's primary responsibilities included leading the First Year Experience committee, which includes members from academic affairs and student services, and assessing student learning and managing student concerns at the undergraduate level.
Dallinger joined Western's communication faculty in 1981 as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 1992. She has served as a faculty associate for instructional development, faculty associate for assessment, coordinator of assessment and director of assessment of student learning and the University Writing Exam.
Dallinger has received such awards as the Professional Development Award (1998), the Faculty Excellence Award (1995, 1994, 1992, 1990, 1989) and the Daniel Rohrer Research Award. She has been published in numerous professional journals and textbooks, and has presented professional papers at conferences throughout the world. Dallinger is a consultant-evaluator for The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, is the executive secretary for the Organization for the Study of Communication Language and Gender and is an editorial review board member for the Journal of Communication and for Communication Studies. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwest Missouri State University, her master's degree from Texas Christian University and her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
"Judi's leadership as the assistant provost for undergraduate studies and as coordinator of the First Year Experience program will serve the division well," Thomas said. "She brings experience and enthusiasm to this newly-created position."
The associate provost for undergraduate and graduate studies was created to merge the direction of undergraduate and graduate studies, following Associate Provost and Director of Graduate Studies Barbara Baily's retirement, which is effective Aug. 1.
As associate provost for undergraduate and graduate studies, Dallinger will manage undergraduate and graduate studies, and serve as the director of the School of Graduate Studies and the University liaison to the Higher Learning Commission. She will also be responsible for the continued supervision of the First Year Experience; assessing student learning; handling undergraduate student issues and complaints; and serving as the Illinois Articulation Initiative coordinator. In addition, Dallinger will represent the Office of the Provost on various councils and committees.
