September 15, 2008
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Graduate student numbers at Western Illinois University increased with Fall 2008 enrollment gaining 11.7 percent to 2,440, up 256 students from Fall 2007, according to 10-day enrollment reports.
"We're pleased that students are continuing their master's level education at Western Illinois University," said WIU Provost and Academic Vice President Jack Thomas. "We have implemented new graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Museum Studies and the Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which began this fall at the Quad Cities campus. We continue to work with deans and faculty about the possibilities of adding more quality graduate-level degrees at both of our campuses."
Western began offering a doctorate degree in educational leadership in Spring 2006, and in Spring 2008, Western debuted its first five-year integrated bachelor's and master's degree program in accountancy. This fall, two five-year integrated bachelor's and master's degree programs began in computer science and physics. The programs provide an opportunity for undergraduates to complete a traditional four-year undergraduate degree and then, with one additional year, earn a graduate degree from Western in their respective program.
Western also continues to be ranked in the top tier of Midwest Universities Master's-granting institutions, according to U.S. News and World Report's Annual College Rankings 2009 edition. WIU is among 21 public universities included in the Midwest top tier of 67 masters institutions.
