Women's Art Exhibit Opening Reception
February 27, 2009
MACOMB, IL - - The public is invited to an opening reception for the Western Illinois University Women's Center's "Women's Art: Women's Vision" Art Exhibit, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 in the coffee bar area on the first floor of the Malpass Library.
According to Jennifer Howard, a junior art major from Bushnell, (IL), who works in the Women's Center and coordinated this year's exhibit, the reception will provide an opportunity for campus and surrounding community members to meet artists whose works will be on display, along with Charles Wright, WIU art department chair, who served as juror for the exhibit.
"The purpose of this exhibit is to bring recognition to established artists and to encourage beginning artists to keep pursuing their talents," Howard said. "The exhibit also provides an opportunity to pay tribute to all of the women throughout history who, because of their gender, were denied admission to art academies; were not acknowledged for their talents; and were not included in art history books."
Artists who submitted works for this year's show include students, faculty, alumni and community members. Mediums include water color, textiles, oil paint, charcoal, mixed media and photography. Works by six artists were accepted by the juror: Kari Busard, Jennifer Howard, Jan Rockwell, Jo Sanders, Margaret Sinex and Brandi Woolam.
Prizes will be awarded to Jan Rockwell, first place, for "Day View" (watercolor); Jo Sanders, second place, for "Diamonds and Bits" (slit tapestry); and to Margaret Sinex, third place, for "Sandy Ross" (charcoal drawing).
Women's Center director Janine Cavicchia said, "Jennifer has done a wonderful job of implementing the exhibit again this semester. We are pleased with the diversity and quality of artwork submitted, and we appreciate everyone who has helped with the exhibit, including University Libraries Dean Phyllis Self and her staff."
The exhibit will be displayed in the Library's first floor atrium throughout March.
