Ag Open House for Prospective Students Oct. 31

MACOMB, IL - - Later this month, Western Illinois University's School of Agriculture will offer prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the exciting career opportunities available in the agriculture industry and the quality of an agriculture education at Western. The Fall 2009 Agriculture Open House is slated from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The open-house event will start with a registration period from 8:30-9 a.m. in Knoblauch Hall, room 152, on WIU's Macomb campus.

This year, WIU's School of Agriculture celebrates the 90th anniversary of the four-year degree offering in agriculture at Western. The open house will coincide with the School of Agriculture's annual "Ag Day" event at Hanson Field, as well.

According to Brian Schullian, agriculture student recruitment coordinator, the open house event is open free to high school and transfer students.

"Students will be able to see what Western's School of Agriculture can offer them in relation to their individual agriculture-career interests," said Schullian. "Dr. Bailey, the School of Ag's chair, as well as other faculty, students and alumni will be on hand to provide prospective students information about the School of Ag and life at Western," he added.

During the event, each student participant will have his or her name entered for a $100 scholarship drawing, and two scholarships will be given away.

The schedule for the Fall 2009 Agriculture Open House event is as follows:

  • 8:30-9:00 a.m.: Registration, Knoblauch Hall 152
  • 9:00-9:05 a.m.: Welcome by William Bailey, chair, School of Agriculture, Knoblauch Hall 152
  • 9:05-9:30 a.m.: Alumni/student panel, Knoblauch Hall 152
  • 9:30-9:50 a.m.: Advising, Ember Keithley, academic adviser, College of Business and Technology, Knoblauch Hall 152
  • 9:50-10:45 a.m.: Campus tour
  • 10:45-11:50 a.m.: Faculty discussions, Knoblauch Hall, rooms 226, 305, 306 and 307
  • 11:50-12:30 p.m.: Complimentary lunch, Knoblauch 239
  • 1:05 p.m.: Football game


During the campus tour, prospective students and participants will be taken to the University Farm and Livestock Center.

At the conclusion of the open house event, participants have the option of attending a Western Illinois University football game (complimentary tickets).
