March 1, 2010
MACOMB, IL - - Winners of the Western Illinois University annual concerto competition will perform with the WIU Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 5 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall.
The competition attracts 40-50 students studying composition, instrumental and vocal music, according to School of Music Director of Orchestral Activities Richard Hughey, who will conduct the Concerto Concert.
Each Fall Semester the WIU School of Music holds an annual competition for current students to win the chance to perform with the WIU Symphony Orchestra. Forty to 50 students compete for this honor each year. Instrumentalists, vocalists and composition students are all encouraged to participate.
The concert will include the following:
Amber Dean (Moline, IL), senior music-instrumental performance major, performing the Richard Strauss "Horn Concerto No. 20";
Emily Hart (Quincy, IL) freshman music-instrumental performance major, performing the Johann Nepomuk Hummel "Adagio and Variations for Oboe";
Chelsea Maroney (Arlington Heights, IL), senior music education and vocal performance, singing two arias: Gaetano Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" and Zerlina's aria from Mozart's "Don Giovanni"; and
Sora Park (Seoul, South Korea), a master's degree student in music-instrumental performance, presenting the first movement of the "Piano Concerto No. 1" of Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky.
There will be a world premiere of "Four Textures at 80," composed by David Rappenecker (Burlington, IA), a master's degree student in music composition.
The WIU Symphony Orchestra will conclude the concert with "Les Préludes," the popular masterwork of Franz Liszt.
Tickets, $7, are available at the Hainline Box Office, (309) 298-2900, from noon-5 p.m. weekdays.
