Ilon Lauer is a Professor in the Department of Communication at Western Illinois University.  He received his B.A. in History and English at Oakland University, his M.A. in Speech Communication from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in Speech Communication from the University of Georgia. He primarily teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in rhetoric, argumentation, and communication theory.

He has published his work in a diverse range of journals including the Quarterly Journal of Speech, Argumentation and Advocacy, Journal for the History of Rhetoric, and Human Mutation. He has presented a number of professional papers to national and international communication associations and served as the Book Review Editor for Argumentation and Advocacy. In addition to his scholarship, he has coached nationally ranked debate teams at Western Illinois and at the University of Georgia. As an undergraduate, he debated at Wayne State University.
