Denise Daugherty

University Housing and Dining Services-Thompson Hall

"Be happy and be positive!"

Denise began her career at Western Illinois University as a Clerk in Residence Life in July 2013 and remains in that current position. Denise is the smiling face of Lincoln, Washington, Grote, and Thompson Residence Halls. Her positive attitude makes this position a perfect fit for her! Denise is responsible for issuing keys for all the students, she checks them in and out, she helps students make room changes, addresses any issues or concerns, oversees the mail, confirms timecards and processes payroll for the desk assistants.

Denise was brought up in Leatherneck Country. Her father was a professor in the Finance Department, her mom worked as office support in Brophy, and Denise has a teaching degree from Western. She and her husband met at WIU and he now teaches in the LEJA Dept. Their son is also an alum!

When asked what Denise likes most about her job, she sited her interaction with all the students and the students who work “the desk.” She shared, “We all build close relationships with each other and with the Resident Assistants. It’s never boring and we have a good time working together! UHDS is the best department. We have picnics and breakfasts which keeps us happy. They are good to provide help when it’s needed. Our bosses are so nice; the hard part is that they leave every two years.”

One of Denise’s most memorable experiences was when she was awarded the Student Services Spotlight. She added, “Andrew wrote the nicest letter for me…it made me cry, it was so touching!”

Denise credits Bridget McCormick as someone who has helped her in her career at WIU. Denise responded, “When I interviewed I was older. I was nervous and I thought no one would ever hire me. Bridget was so good! She trained me and helped me. She believed in me, even when I didn’t!”

Denise loves bringing her grandson to the WIU Homecoming activities. He loves seeing Rocky! When she is not working you will find her spending time with her grandson, flower gardening, enjoying the pool and the pond in the backyard. She enjoys having the summers off to enjoy outside activities!

HR salutes Denise Daugherty as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
