Member Training and Development

One of the many benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority is the training and development opportunities offered through community, council, and chapter activities. Each national organization has minimal requirements for its chapters to achieve personal growth and development among its members. Councils typically provide regular personal and professional development programming. Fraternity and sorority members are supplied with the tools to address such topics as campus resources, personal finance, bystander intervention, safe alcohol consumption, event planning, servant leadership, and much more.

Outside of the local chapter, there are a number of campus and national organizational opportunities for fraternity and sorority members to continue their personal growth.

National Interfraternal Honor Societies

Western Illinois University hosts two fraternity/sorority honor societies, Rho Lambda National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society and the Order of Omega National Fraternity/Sorority Honor Society. Both organizations recognize exceptional academic, service, and leadership contributions not only to the fraternity/sorority community but to Western and the Macomb communities as well.

President Roundtables and Advisement

The Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff meet regularly with the leaders of each organization. The staff will provide updates and professional development at a monthly meeting of all presidents. Additionally, the staff supports each President with a monthly one-on-one meeting to discuss anything the office needs clarification on or the organization is struggling with.

Regional and National Conferences

Students involved in fraternity and sorority life will have the opportunity to attend regional or national conventions, retreats, academies, and/or leadership schools. These opportunities are hosted by individual organizations or regional fraternal affiliations and focus on personal and organizational leadership and growth. Additionally, many of these opportunities will provide students with a chance to further connect fraternity/sorority to their everyday life.

Some of these opportunities include:

  • Regional Officer Trainings
  • National Conventions
  • Emerging Leader Institutes

There are both council-specific and inter-council conferences that take place during each academic term. The Panhellenic Council community is invited each year to attend the  College Panhellenic Academy to stay up-to-date on community knowledge, exchange ideas, and provide hands-on training. In addition to the general AFLV sessions (below), the conference sponsors the  National Black Greek Leadership Conference

Inter-council conferences include the  Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) and the  Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) which focus on leadership, chapter values, personal and chapter development, and community building.
