Leave of Absence

A leave of absence may be necessary when you experience an extenuating circumstance that requires you to step away from your studies for one or more semesters. If you are experiencing issues that you believe would require a leave of absence, please contact the Student Development and Success Center (SDSC) for consultation.

Withdrawing vs. Leave of Absence

A total University withdrawal is a decision to unenroll from all current classes and can be made up to the withdrawal deadline for any reason. Once past the withdrawal deadline and with documented extenuating circumstances, you may appeal to withdraw through the Student Development and Success Center (SDSC). Many students who withdraw from their current courses do not have a plan to return while others return the following semester. A leave of absence is a time away from the University with a clear plan to return.

Leave of Absence Duration

You may be on a leave of absence for two full semesters without losing access to your WIU.edu email address. Any former undergraduate who has not attended Western Illinois University for one or more spring or fall terms must complete an undergraduate reentry form.

Resuming your Studies

Once you are ready to officially register for classes, you must complete the Intent to Resume form.
