Welcome to the Bull Test

43rd Annual Sale • March 12, 2015

The 41st annual Western Illinois University Performance Bull Sale posted new records for individual animal sale price. Lot 53 a purebred Gelbvieh consigned by Fecht Gelbvieh of Carthage sold for $7000 and Lot 2, the top indexing and top selling composite Simmental-Angus from Bill Washburn of Olney brought $6000. Both were new records for individual animals. Forty-four buyers from Illinois, Missouri and Iowa took home 60 high-quality, high performance bulls for an average price of $2781. The top 20 bulls averaged $4153. Repeat buyers again accounted for a high percentage of the buyers, gross dollars, and bulls selling; attesting to the success cow men and women are achieving with bulls out of this sale.

The tenth Merial SureHealth bull sale was held at the Western Illinois University Livestock Center in Macomb on March 15. Monte Lowderman of the Lowderman Auction Service, kept the crowd engaged with a lively, fast paced sale.

The top indexing bull over all breeds and top indexing Angus consigned by Bill Wyffels of Geneseo sold for $4000. This bull set a record for the all time top marbling ratio bull in any WIU Performance test with an IMF ratio of 211. Top selling Angus was Lot 308 consigned by Tony Griffin of Monroe City, MO bringing $4700.

Topping the Simmental consignments at $4200 was the top indexing Simmental, a son of SVF/NJC Built Right N48 from Rincker Simmentals of Shelbyville.

The top indexing and top selling Red Angus bringing $3500 was consigned by Claussen's Red Angus, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Breeders are encouraged to enter their top bull prospects next year as we hope to continue building upon the reputation of the WIU tested bull sale as a source of top quality performance-tested genetics. For more information on entering a bull in the 2013-2014 test, contact the School of Agriculture, Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL 61455 at 309-298-1080.
