Thanksgiving Break Closing & Sign-up Information

Halls close at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, November 18, 2023
Halls reopen at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, November 26, 2023

Break Housing Option
Saturday, November 18 – Sunday, November 26

Thanksgiving Break Closing Details
  • Mail will not be forwarded over break. Mail operations will resume on Monday, November 27, 2023.
  • Thompson and Corbin-Olson Dining Centers will be open from 11:00am-1:30pm on Saturday, November 18, 2023
  • The Dining Center will be closed Saturday, November 18, 2023 through Saturday, November 25, 2023. 
Getting Your Room in Thanksgiving Break Condition
  • Remove all trash from your room. There is a $25 fine for failure to remove trash from your room upon leaving
  • Remove all food items that are not stored in a sealed container. Throw away all food that may be perishable. The University is not responsible for power disruptions that may occur. 
  • Lock your door. Do not let other people into your room after you have left. Before leaving, make sure to get everything out of your room that you'll need over the break as once the building is closed you will not be allowed back in. 
  • Move all belongings three feet away from the heater. There is a $25 fine for obstruction to a heating unit.
  • The temperature in your room will be reduced to 55 Degrees Fahrenheit. This may affect plants and fish. 
  • The hall could be sprayed for pest control. You may want to cover up dishes and other items if they deem appropriate.
  • Close all windows and blinds.
  • Turn off lights.
  • Rooms will be inspected for health and safety reasons. You may be fined or processed judicially for items in plain sight. Both occupants will be held responsible. (we will fine each resident for violations)**

**Any items that are against residence hall policies will be confiscated and documented for follow-up. In most cases, a fine will be charged. See your hall staff for details.

Winter Break Closing & Sign-up Information

Halls reopen for Spring Move-In at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 13, 2024

Winter Break Closing Details

MicroFridge Procedures
  • Remove all food items from the microwave and fridge/freezer.
  • Unplug the unit.
  • Defrost the freezer the night before you leave! You will need towels to soak up the excess water - Use a hair dryer to speed up the process if necessary.
  • Wipe Out: Leave the fridge and freezer door open when you are finished.
  • Verify that all parts that were marked on the MicroFridge Condition Report are there. If you are unsure what was included, contact your hall clerk.

Summer Closure & Sign-up Information

Residence halls close at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, May 10, 2024

Finals week for all students is Monday, May 6 - Friday, May 10, 2024

Need to stay a little later?

If you need to stay past closing because you have an active role in spring commencement, will be graduating, or are a student employee on campus, you must fill out a late stay request form from the "Housing/Dining" information menu on STARS. This will allow you to stay on campus through Sunday, May 12 at no extra cost. Late stay requests will be denied for all other students.

Corbin-Olson Dining Center will be open normal hours between Saturday, May 4 - Friday, May 10 and will then be closed. Thompson Dining Center will be closed beginning May 11.

Students needing Summer housing should fill out this form  and either email it to housing@wiu.edu or bring it to the Seal Hall front office. 

Spring Closing Details
  • 24-hour Quiet Hours will be in effect beginning Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 1:00 A.M.
    lasting until Friday, May 10, 2024 at 7 P.M.
  • Residents must vacate within 24 hours of their last final exam.
  • Residents will be relocated during finals week if they violate residence hall rules and disrupt the floor community.
  • The last day for mail delivery will be Thursday, May 9, 2024.
  • Mail is forwarded over the summer automatically to your home address on file with the Office of the Registrar.
Getting Your Room in Move-Out Condition
  • Lumber and large items must be brought to the designated location in your hall.
  • If items are left in the hallways or lounges, the floor or individuals may be fined as they are a fire hazard.
  • DO NOT THROW LARGE ITEMS DOWN THE TRASH CHUTE! There will be a floor fine and/or a building fine if large items are stuck in the trash chute.
  • There are trash bags available at the Information desks for you to use to help you clean up. Begin throwing items away early to avoid the trash chute being full. If you are going home during weekends prior to closing we encourage you to take items home - elevators and carts will be in high demand during finals week. 
  • Pack-up, clean and get your room check-out ready.
  • Return your keys to your RA. You will no longer have access to your room, so it should be the last thing you plan to do before leaving campus.
MicroFridge Procedures

All residents needing to stay past the closing time must fill out a Late Stay Request Form from the "Housing/Dining" Information Menu on STARS. 

Sign-up Instructions for Thanksgiving, Spring, Winter Breaks
  • Log on to your STARS account
  • Choose the "Housing/Dining" Drop-Down Menu
  • Choose "Break Housing Request"

Break Housing Registration will remain open throughout the break period, but is assigned on first-come, first-served basis.
