  • Responsibilities:

    An Instructional Design and Technology Specialist typically:

    • Provides a comprehensive set of programs and services relative to instructional design and development, online teaching practices, adoption and use of online teaching and learning tools, and quality assurance for online courses.
    • Serve as resource person to faculty on technology and pedagogical issues and assist faculty in one-on-one, online group settings.
    • Lead multimedia design specialists in the appropriate selection, recommendation, and evaluation of multimedia and technology development applications for specific instructional systems.
    • Design, develop, deliver and evaluate innovative instructional and faculty support programs regarding the effective integration of pedagogical practices and technology into online, blended and face-to-face teaching at Western. A main portion of this time is spent instructing the Best Practices in Teaching Online Course for faculty and providing face-to-face and webinar training sessions to faculty. These employees are also responsible for the development and facilitation of any special training events such as the annual Summer Academy.
    • Research, monitor, track and bring the latest teaching, research, and technology methodologies to campus.
    • Develop and make available instructional materials and resources in a variety of formats.
    • Facilitates the ongoing adoption and effective use of distance learning tools and course management systems (e.g. Western Online) by the University community.
    • Provides evaluation and quality improvement measures to improve online and distance learning courses and support resources. This includes evaluating new online courses by stringent review of the course with the Online Course checklist and collaborative assistance in helping faculty make modifications to improve their courses.
    • Assists faculty in the development of online courses and modules.
    • When necessary, provides supervision and evaluation of student worker and graduate assistant projects for the OTL.
    • Assist in engaging the university community in the ongoing discussion of superior pedagogical tools and methods.
    • Serve as OTL liaison for various committees involving the use of technology at Western Illinois University.

     

  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design and Technology, Educational Studies in Adult Learning and Learning Theory, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a closely related discipline.
    2. A total of two (2) years working in higher education with a focus including:
      1. Instructional design, e-learning, media development, and training in multiple formats.
      2. Providing teaching and training face-to-face, online via a course management system, and through video conferencing. 
      3. Serving as a support administrator in a commercial learning management system such as Blackboard or Desire2Learn.

        OR

    3. Master’s Degree in Instructional Design and Technology, Educational Studies in Adult Learning and Learning Theory, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a closely related discipline.
  • Starting Salary: $3810/month
