Program Overview

Communication is a field that has a long tradition and is also very contemporary. Rhetoric—the persuasive use of language—was the first academic discipline that was developed in ancient Greece. For many centuries, rhetoric was the most important part of higher education curriculum.

Today, communication can refer to broadcasting, technology, journalism and communication studies. At Western Illinois University, the Department of Communication explores the role of communication in daily living and work.

Choosing two of the four sequences (rhetoric, persuasion, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication), you will learn the tools and skills of effective communication.

A major in communication will provide you with both career skills and an excellent education. The information you’ll gain will help you in both professional and personal situations.
