MACOMB, IL -- A Western Illinois University family and consumer sciences associate professor has been selected as the chair of the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education for the American Dietetics Association.

According to WIU family and consumer sciences (FCS) department chair Charlene Callison, the association selected Karen Greathouse because of her vision and experience in the field. Greathouse has been involved in the approval/accreditation process for dietetics education since 1988.

"As a review panel member, site visitor, panel chair and member of the commission, she has learned from program directors, students, administrators and dietetics professionals to delve into new dimensions of dietetics education," Callison added. "She is a leader behind the dietetics program in our department. Dr. Greathouse has contributed to the program, has defined its goals and has worked tirelessly with students and professionals."

Greathouse has been a family and consumer sciences faculty member at Western since 1991. Prior to working at Western, Greathouse was a nutrition instructor at Dickinson (ND) State University, a nutrition education trainer for the State of Colorado-United States Department of Agriculture and assistant director of dietetics at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Greathouse is currently chair of the Foodservice Systems Management Council and panel chair of the American Dietetics Association.

She has been named American Dietetics Association Educator of the Year and Teacher of the Year at WIU and received a service award from the national association. Greathouse received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and her doctorate from Kansas State University.
