MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University recently received its 10,000th application for freshmen admission for Fall 2013, a 2.3 percent increase compared to last year at this time.

According to Admissions Director Andy Borst, WIU received 10,326 applications for Fall 2012, which was a record. Borst noted that Western typically receives an additional 500 applications between now and the application deadline of Aug. 1. Last year, WIU did not reach the 10,000-application mark until mid-June.

"We are excited to be about two months ahead of last year's pace for freshmen applications and we are thrilled with the quality of these applications," Borst added. "We have offered more than 100 Centennial Honors Scholarships [compared to 23 last year] to students scoring in the top 1 percent in the nation on the ACT or SAT. Applications from students who qualify for our new Western Commitment Scholarships are up 12 percent. We have received fewer applications from students who fall below our published admissions criteria and the waiting list for our alternative admission program is smaller than last year."

According to ACT's State Profile for Illinois, the number of students in the state who indicate Western Illinois University as their first choice college when selecting schools to send their scores has increased from 1,600 in 2010 to 1,809 for students in 2012.
