WIU Broadcasting Students Capture National Awards

MACOMB, IL - Students in the Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting earned four grand prize awards at a national competition over the weekend in Burbank, CA. The department also earned 11 total nominations.

The National Broadcasting Society (NBS) gave out the awards Saturday, March 15 in its 51st annual National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition.

Seven students represented the University's chapter at NBS at the 72nd National Convention from March 10 – 16, attending workshops, talking to industry professionals and participating as audience members at television show tapings like the "The Price is Right" and "Conan."

"NEWS3 Live at 4" won grand prize for best video newscast and an additional nomination in the same category. NEWS3 is a student-produced newscast that airs live twice a week every semester. An additional newscast was added in February, airing at 9 a.m. every Wednesday.

News Coordinator Jasmine Crighton said the winning episode covered the tornado devastation that happened in Washington, IL, in November 2013.

This year's grand prize winners include:
• Audio Feature Segment "Balloon Rally in Macomb," by Chris Lovingood, senior, Peoria, IL
• Audio PSA "WIU Dance Marathon PSA" by Jay Jacobs, junior, Harvard, IL
• Audio Commercial "Chicks Commercial" by Anthony Jones, junior, Poplar Grove, IL
• Video Newscast "NEWS3 November 19, 2013" by Chris Lovingood, Jack Pluta (senior, Laurium, MI), Jay Jacobs and Nico Haeflinger (senior, Marengo, IL)
