MACOMB, IL – The second annual Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service was honored and celebrated Tuesday, April 1, across the country to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs. In cooperation with Western Illinois University, for many years the Macomb community has been the recipient of work by national service members through the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs' Peace Corps Fellows Program in Community Development, AmeriCorps/VISTA program and MAPPING the Future of Your Community program.

To commemorate the day, Macomb Mayor Mike Inman signed a proclamation marking April 1 as National Service Recognition Day in Macomb this year.

"The city of Macomb and greater community have been well served by our partnership with volunteers and fellows from the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs' programs," Inman said. "We have a history of utilizing those folks' skills in community development and the city attorney's office. We are grateful for the relationship."

IIRA Director Chris Merrett noted that volunteerism is a vital part of any community development effort.

"Macomb is just one of the communities where we actively engage national service members and volunteers in efforts to address important community needs," he added.

Nationally, more than four million AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and other volunteers have served in over 70,000 locations across the United States.
