WIU's Cangro Named Conductor for Quincy Area Youth Orchestra

MACOMB, IL – The Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association's Board of Directors has named Western Illinois University Associate Professor of Music Education Richard Cangro as conductor for the Quincy Area Youth Orchestra.

Before coming to Western, Cangro taught for 15 years as a public school band and orchestra coordinator in Connecticut, as well as serving as a youth ensemble conductor and chamber music coach for the Hartt School Community Pre-College Division of the University of Hartford. He also worked for 10 years as an assessor for the Connecticut State Board of Education's beginning teacher licensure program.

Cangro received his bachelor's degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music, his master's degree and his doctorate in music education, both from the Hartt School. He currently serves on the executive board for the International Association for the Study of Cooperation in Education (IASCE).

With his varied performance career, Cangro has performed with several orchestras and various ensembles, including the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He performs with the Quincy Symphony and is a member of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony.

Cangro is also an active conductor, working with school ensembles, festival groups and adult ensembles. He frequently conducts the Illinois Music Education Association (IMEA) District 4 junior orchestra and is the current music director/conductor of the Monmouth Civic Orchestra.

At Western, Cangro teaches graduate and undergraduate music education courses and directs the Community Music School, supervises student teachers, conducts a youth string orchestra and advises WIU's National Association of Music Educators (NafME) chapter. He is also active as a presenter, curriculum consultant and an adjudicator, presenting at numerous music educator conferences around the country and internationally.
