WIU: Who We Are, What We Do

Behind the bricks and mortar, there are the people of Western Illinois University and the Macomb community.

Who We Are 2016-2

Who I Am: Jim Patterson. Originally from Missouri, I earned my B.S. in accounting from Western Kentucky, M.S. in systems management from Southern California, MBA in marketing from Western Michigan and a Ph.D. in supply chain management from Michigan State. A former Marine Corps captain, I also worked nearly 20 years in manufacturing and logistics management positions with Avon, Coca-Cola and Nestlé. My wife of 43 years, Diane, and I have lived in VA, GA, NC, HI, CT, MI (twice), TX, CA, and now Iowa. We also travel between Chicago and Denver to visit our two children and four grandkids.

What I Do: For the past four years, I have been the College of Business and Technology assistant dean at the Riverfront Campus, as well as associate professor in the Department of Management and Marketing. I have co-authored three editions of Purchasing & Supply Chain Management for Cengage Learning. Additionally, I volunteer with a variety of organizations, including the Institute for Supply Management, QC Chamber, QC Mfg. Lab, QC Foreign Trade Zone, Midwest Community Development Institute, QC Advanced Mfg. Innovation Hub, Reformed Church in America, IL DECO, Journal of Supply Chain Management, and JA.

Why I Love WIU: I came to the WIU-QC Campus in Spring 1995 expecting to finish my dissertation and then go out and find a "real job." Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with WIU and the Quad Cities! In academia, we seldom get to build and develop new things. At WIU-QC, I've been fortunate to help shape a new Riverfront Campus and see the CBT-QC contingent grow from four to nearly 30 full-time faculty and staff. As a result of teaching at WIU, I also got a ride in a U.S. Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 in 2009!
